Ontario Window Tinting Laws

LEGAL TINTING REQUIREMENTS

Laws for the legality of window tinting in Ontario are vague, so in an effort to clarify them we will address what the law actually says (as of November 2018). That being said please review the laws and use your best judgment, as we are not responsible for any decisions you make in regards to window tinting on vehicles.

WHAT THE LAWS MEAN FOR WINDOW TINTING IN ONTARIO

In Ontario the laws for window tinting were updated in 2017, stating that the windshield of any car may not have an aftermarket window tint applied. Cars coming directly from the factory can have a 70% VLT and tinting may not extend more than 75mm from the top of the windshield. This applies only to the windshield and only on cars made after January 1, 2017.

As to windows, Ontario law R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 74 (1) states “No person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway, (a) unless the windshield and the windows on either side of the compartment containing the steering wheel are in such a condition as to afford the driver a clear view to the front and side of the motor vehicle; and (b) unless the rear window is in such a condition as to afford the driver a clear view to the rear of the motor vehicle.”

Other than windshield tinting, the law is vague. There isn’t a set limit for what percentage window tinting is legal in Ontario. It is at the officer’s discretion on what level of tint constitutes obstruction. We usually suggest at Cozy Car that it is very unlikely you will ever be bothered by law enforcement officers in Ontario for 35% tint.

For people that prefer darker than 35%, we suggest 25%, which is a safe alternative that most likely won’t draw the attention of law enforcement. That being said, there are no guarantees; it is only our personal opinion based on our experience in the industry. The final decision, of course, remains the customer’s choice.
